Doors Open Winnipeg--this weekend

Doors Open Winnipeg - Presented by Heritage Winnipeg

Doors Open Winnipeg is a great chance to explore some of Winnipeg's most interesting building, usually not open to the public.  Many historic buildings participate, giving you a behind the scenes view of some great buildings and history, all for free.  There will also be free waling tours in the Exchange District and a free screening of a documentary about Winnipeg's General Strike at Cinematheque.  Some of the buildings you can check out are Bank of Montreal (corner of Portage and Main), Government House (on Kennedy, next to the Legislative Building),The Law Courts, the Naval Museum of Canada, St. Mary's Cathedral, the Winnipeg Fire Museum, the Winnipeg Railway Museum, and the Vaughn Street Jail, which has costumed performers from the days when this now abandoned jail was in full use.

Check the website for a list of buildings and their location and hours open at http://www.doorsopenwinnipeg.ca/index.html

The Zoo

This past Saturday, about 40 of our students visited Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park Zoo.  It was a hot day to start, and our visit ended with a downpour of rain.  Luckily, we were pretty much finished when the rain started.

Our Students Around SJSD

Finally the weather is beautiful, and everyone has been keeping busy.

Some students have been cooking,

some have been playing soccer,

some have been playing ping pong,

some were helping out with John Taylor Collegiate's 50th reunion,

and some have been focused on studying.

It is the coming up on the last week of May already, and we will be going to the zoo, to a Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball game, having our annual year-end BBQ, and saying goodbye to our Chilean group as they leave Winnipeg.  This will be a great week!

Canada vs. US Women's Soccer

Last night we attended the Canada-US Women's soccer game here in Winnipeg.  There was a great turnout.

Manitoba Museum

This past Saturday we visited the Manitoba Museum to experience some Manitoba history.

After the museum we went to the always popular Smoke's Poutinerie to try all different kinds of poutine.

This week we will be going to both Stars on Ice and a Canada vs. US women's soccer game.
It is getting closer to the end of the school year, and there are still a lot of things to fit in!

Opera & Symphony

This month our Chilean students and some others also got a chance to go to both the Manitoba Opera and a rehearsal of the Winnipeg Symphony and Peking Acrobats.

Tha Manitoba Opera performed La Boheme and it was a great performance.  Some of our students had their picture taken by the opera company.

Last week we also went to a rehearsal for the Winnipeg Symphony's performance with the Peking Acrobats.

Unfortunately, they rehearsed a few sections over and over again and we did not get to see as much of the acrobats as we would have liked to.  We did see:

And finally, some of our students at St. James Collegiate are taking a Sustainable Wilderness Education course and got to spend an afternoon at an archery range and sent us a picture.

This weekend we will be visiting the Manitoba Museum and Smoke's Poutinerie to try out some poutine.
