Ice Skating at the Forks

Yesterday, even though it was about -30 degrees, we went ice skating at The Forks!  Several students showed up dressed for the weather and ready to skate.

It was so cold out that we were interviewed by the Weather Channel about why we were out and how we were keeping warm!

Crepes at Kawaii

A few brave students came out in the cold to have Japanese style crepes at Kawaii Crepe on the first day of the winter break, and then to look around the shops of Osborne Village for some last-minute Christmas presents.  The crepes here are always great and it was a fun afternoon.

John Taylor Collegiate Goes Ice Skating

Yesterday John Taylor Collegiate's wonderful resource teacher Ms Rokosh arranged for the school's international students to go ice skating at the MTS Iceplex.  It was an awesome afternoon of skating, everyone had a great time, and no one got hurt!  Thanks to Ms. Rokosh for planning such a great afternoon.

Christmas open House at the Legislative Building

This past Saturday was the annual Christmas Open House at the Manitoba Legislative Building.  A lot of students came out to tour the building, meet the Members of the Legislative Assembly, and some even met Manitoba's Premier.

The Manitoba Legislative building is a beautiful building, and it is worth touring if you have never seen it.  You can visit at any time, though it is especially nice when decorated for Christmas.

Some Free Christmas Events Around Winnipeg

There are quite a few free Christmas events happening around Winnipeg in the next couple of weeks.  One of them is the Winnipeg Art Gallery's tree trimming party this Sunday, December 1st.

On Wednesday, December 4th, the Grace Hospital here in St. James will light their tree, have a choir sing, Santa, cookie decorating, and end with fireworks.

On Saturday, December 7th, it is Family Day at the Festival of Trees and Lights downtown at the Manitoba Hydro Gallery, 360 Portage Avenue,  where there will be entertainment throughout the day, Royal Winnipeg Ballet dancers in costumes, and horse drawn carriage rides between 1:30 and 4:30 pm.  For more info and a schedule of performers, check their website here.

Remember also that Saturday, December 7th is Christmas Open House at the Legislative Building, and we will be there from 1:00 to 3:00.  This is a great chance to walk through the building, meet some provincial government ministers, and eat Christmas treats.  See you there!

Free Korean Movie This Weekend

The Korea Times will be hosting a free Korean Movie Day in honour of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice.

This Week: International Education Reception & Koats for Kids

This Monday was the annual reception held at Manitoba's legislative building in honour of International Education week, and several St. James students volunteered at the event, and one of our students, Yuka from Japan won an award.  The Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba attended, and students got to take a picture with him as well.

On Tuesday, several students went to Koats for Kids to volunteer, sorting donated winter clothing.  This is a great program and we are always happy to volunteer here.

On Thursday we have a visit to the Univerity of Manitoba for Discovery Day for International
Students and also a Manitoba Opera performance in the evening.  A busy week!
